Henry Smith MP has joined Parliamentary colleagues in backing a campaign from Macmillan Cancer Support to improve cancer outcomes.
Henry said,
“I was pleased to put my name to the latest campaign from Macmillan. We all know of someone affected by this terrible disease and I believe it's important to ensure we get closer to defeating cancer.
“I welcome the plans recently announced from the Health Secretary that will see the return of a named, accountable GP for every patient.
“Additionally, I was also pleased to see an additional £160 million going towards the Cancer Drugs Fund in England, meaning that the amount committed to the Fund now totals more than £1 billion. The Fund has helped more than 55,000 cancer patients since it was set up four years ago, and provides pioneering drugs to those who need them most. But there is more to do.
“I have always been passionate about better cancer support and awareness, but when my mother died of cancer my support was only re-enforced. Whilst I was proud in 2012 to open the new Digital Mammography Unit at Crawley Hospital, I am well aware that there is absolutely no room for complacency.”
Part of the letter co-signed by Henry says;
“Macmillan Cancer Support takes the view that to improve outcomes for everyone diagnosed with cancer, our party should support the following recommendations:
- dramatically decrease the proportion of people diagnosed with cancer via an emergency route
- reduce variations and inequalities in access to treatment, particularly for older people
- make sure all people with cancer are better supported after treatment has ended.”
Henry continued;
“If there is anything I can do to assist any anyone in Crawley, whether you’re a patient, relative, or a member of medical staff, please never hesitate to get in touch. Feel free to either call me on 01293 934554, write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA, or email me directly via [email protected]”
