Crawley MP, Henry Smith, was delighted to recently host, for the third consecutive year, the launch of State of Maternity Services report 2013 by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), of which he is a patron and proactive supporter.
Henry commented at the event:
“I’m delighted that, thanks to significant investment by the Government, there are over 1,200 more midwives – resulting in a near record high.
“What I’m campaigning for in Crawley is a mid-wife led unit to be established and I’m delighted the local NHS is now looking at this possibility. Since the Crawley Hospital Maternity Unit was closed in 2001 the rate of births to Crawley mothers has increased but they have been inconvenienced not being able to deliver in our home town.”
Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives Professor Cathy Warwick said:
“I thank Henry wholeheartedly for helping the Royal College of Midwives launch its annual State of Maternity Services report in Parliament. This is the third time he has helped us in this way, for which I thank him wholeheartedly.
“Henry is a keen supporter and friend of midwives, and I look forward to continuing to work with him as we push for better maternity care.”
