Following a Parliamentary Written Question and meetings with ministers, Crawley MP, Henry Smith, has succeeded in blocking an attempt by Brussels to oblige the Department for Communities & Local Government to fly the European Union flag all year round.
Henry commented:
“Through combined lobbying efforts alongside ministers, I’m pleased to report that the Council, European Parliament and European Commission have backed down regarding their concerted efforts to oblige the UK government to fly the EU flag on a permanent basis.
“I’d urge EU officials and political representatives to re-double their efforts to stem the chilling effect of the eurozone crisis on the union’s trade exports rather than wasting legislative time and British taxpayers’ money tinkering with bureaucratic, pointless directives.
“In many ways this issue exemplifies the overarching flaw in the European ideal – the EU is too focused on becoming a political entity rather than seeking to enhance the general prosperity of member states’ citizens. This ‘directive’ and the numerous others than fly out of Brussels serve as a constant reminder of the need to reform the European Union - www.letbritaindecide.com”
