Henry Smith, Crawley Bulletin, Dissolution of Parliament
At one minute past midnight on Wednesday 3rd May, Parliament is dissolved and all MPs cease holding their position.
It’s been my privilege to serve our town in the House of Commons over the last seven years, and I’m standing for re-election on 8th June as the Conservative Party Candidate to be Member of Parliament for Crawley. During the election campaign I'll be responding to emails in this capacity, rather than as the local MP.
While Parliament dissolves on Wednesday, I’m still on hand to assist. Please feel free to contact me either by email: [email protected] or call: 01293 934554.
General Election, Thursday 8th June 2017
It’s an honour to represent Crawley in the House of Commons and I’m delighted to have been re-selected by our local Conservative association to seek re-election.
This is an important choice for Crawley and the UK. Last year a majority of the electorate in Crawley and throughout our country I believe rightly chose for Britain to leave the European Union, and Theresa May needs the firm backing as Prime Minister to secure the best Brexit deal for the country and to deliver the Plan for Britain.
Strong and stable leadership: The general election is a clear choice between strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives, or a weak and unstable coalition led by Jeremy Corbyn and propped up by Nicola Sturgeon.
Blood Cancer: It's my honour to chair the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Blood Cancer. Such groups cannot be active during the dissolution period; before the general election was called we launched an inquiry into blood cancer care in the NHS. This subject is one of personal importance not only to me, but to others across Crawley. If I’m re-elected to the House of Commons this is a cause I’ll continue to pursue.
Our natural environment: I was delighted to host the Greener UK coalition of environmental organisations, from the National Trust to Sussex Wildlife Trust, in the House of Commons earlier this year. We discussed how the UK’s EU exit is an opportunity to restore and enhance our natural surroundings, and I’m delighted that this cause now has the backing of more than 200 MPs from across the House of Commons.
Boeing: Supporting Boeing’s investment in a new aircraft hangar maintenance facility at Gatwick Airport, which is expected to support more than 100 jobs for the company and its suppliers around the Crawley area. At a time when the UK is looking out towards the rest of the world, this facility will also add maintenance capacity at Gatwick to support airlines as the airport continues to grow in both short and long haul services.
Article 50: Welcoming the Prime Minister’s vision of a Global Britain. While we are leaving the institutions of the European Union, we are not leaving Europe.
NHS: Welcoming services returning to Crawley Hospital – in stark contrast to the previous decade. Sustained investment in the NHS needs a strong and thriving economy.
Keep up to date on my website, on Facebook, via Twitter, and on YouTube.
Over the last seven years it has been my honour to serve you as Member of Parliament for Crawley.
I hope to have the opportunity to keep speaking up for our town as its representative in the House of Commons.
