Henry Smith MP has called on Crawley to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May 2015.
This year VE Day, Victory in Europe Day, marks 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe, and is to be commemorated with three days of events, from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th May.
Henry said;
“I hope that people in Crawley and across our country will reflect on the 70th anniversary of VE Day, and how the sacrifices of the Second World War ensured the freedoms we enjoy. Standing in the House of Commons or attending Royal British Legion events in Crawley is a constant reminder.
“I’ve contacted schools across Crawley to advise of a range of resources that will be made available, to help put these events into context for young people.”
One of the commemorations around the country will see beacons across Great Britain lit on Friday 8th May.
Henry continued;
“I’ve written to Crawley Borough Council to ask them to ensure that the beacon at Tilgate Park will be lit – just as it was to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 – to see Crawley takes part in celebrating VE Day.
“It is vital that we remember the distinction of those who continue to protect our freedoms. It is a pleasure to work with organisations such as ABF The Soldiers’ Charity of which I’m honoured to be a vice-president and the Royal British Legion, and last year I was pleased to secure Crawley Town FC’s participation in the Tickets for Troops scheme.”
