The Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill, introduced by Henry Smith MP to legislate for a historic ban on trophy hunting imports into this country, has passed its second reading in the House of Lords.

Henry said;

“I’m delighted that the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill, which was passed by the House of Commons in March, is continuing its parliamentary journey as it completes second reading in the House of Lords.

“In particular I’m grateful to Baroness Fookes for her impressive work in leading the Bill through the second chamber.

“I’m continually awestruck at the numbers of people from across Britain contacting me in support of enhanced animal welfare provisions and I’m grateful to all who have given this legislation their support.”

Henry’s legislation would ban British hunters from bringing body part ‘trophies’ of endangered and vulnerable animals into Great Britain.

The Crawley MP introduced the Bill in the House of Commons on 15th June 2022, it passed second reading on 25th November, completed committee stage on 25th January 2023, and was approved by MPs at report stage and third reading on 17th March.

The Bill’s first reading in the House of Lords promptly followed on 20th March. Following the Lords approving the legislation at second reading today, the next phase of its passage through the upper house will be committee stage on a date to be determined.
