Henry Smith MP has joined with fellow Members of Parliament from across the county to celebrate Sussex Day, 16th June, in New Palace Yard, Westminster.
Henry said;
“It was an honour to ensure Sussex Day became officially recognised when I was the Leader of West Sussex County Council.
“The county, older than England itself, goes back to the fifth century, with the Kingdom of Sussex.”
The gathering of the county’s MPs was the first such assembling of the local Members of Parliament since the late 1800s, which also took place in New Palace Yard.
Henry continued;
“Today is also St Richard’s Day, commemorating St Richard, the patron saint of Sussex, and marks the anniversary of the moving of his body from its original burial place to a shrine at Chichester Cathedral.
“The proud heritage of Sussex continues today, where the county’s economy, led by the Gatwick Diamond area centred on Crawley, is playing its part in the UK’s continued growth for the future.
“Happy Sussex Day!”
