Henry Smith MP has welcomed the choice of the Scottish to remain as part of the United Kingdom.
Henry said:
“I am delighted that the people of Scotland have chosen to stay a part of the UK. The last three centuries have shown that we achieve so much when we work together, both here at home and around the world.
“I have long believed that we need a new constitutional settlement in this county to achieve equality for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and crucially, England too.
"I favour a federal United Kingdom, a very similar system to that which exists well in countries like Australia, Canada, Germany and the US."
Following the statement by the Prime Minister this morning, Henry also commented:
“As the Prime Minister said earlier, English votes for English laws must happen in tandem with, and at the same pace as, Scotland.
“A number of people in Crawley have contacted me about this issue in the last week, and I look forward to a proper debate being held across the town and throughout England. This issue has been allowed to lie for far too long.
“The First Secretary of State and Leader of the House of Commons, Rt Hon William Hague MP, has been asked by the Prime Minister to draw up plans which would see English MPs vote on English laws.
“Some have said that this would lead to a ‘two-tiered’ Parliament, however I think this term rather coins the existing system. Only this Government, led by David Cameron, is able to bring about this change.
“If anyone in Crawley wishes to get in touch with me on this issue, please feel free to write to me at Henry Smith MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA, or email me directly at [email protected]”
