As a long standing supporter of the ‘Honest Food’ and nutrition labelling campaigns since before he was elected as Crawley’s Member of Parliament, Henry Smith has today welcomed local firm, Nestle UK & Ireland, and its decision to adopt the Government’s new nutrition labelling scheme.
Commenting, Henry said:
“I’m delighted that Crawley headquartered company, Nestle, have adopted the Government’s nutrition labelling scheme which has been drawn up by the Health Secretary in conjunction with health organisations, retailers and manufactures.
Fiona Kendrick,Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé UK & Ireland, commented:
“We have supported the Government’s Public Health Responsibility Deal since its launch in 2011. We are adopting the new labelling scheme in the UK as we recognise its importance to the public health agenda. Providing consumers with consistency in front of pack labelling is central to them using this information. We look forward to working with the Department of Health and other stakeholders to make it easier for shoppers to choose foods and beverages to create a healthy, balanced diet.”
Clearer labelling helps:
- Consumers to make informed choices about the food they buy;
- Prevent non-British meat being labelled as British;
- Support British producers by allowing consumers to identify genuine British produce;
- Promote superior British produce by highlighting the advantages of British produce; and
- Restore trust and confidence in British food and labelling in general.
Continuing, Henry said:
“People have a right to know where their food comes from and what is in it. Clearer labelling will empower consumers.”
